The Homeless Charity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in Akron, OH. We have both a national interest and local focus on seeking innovative ways to end homelessness. More specifically, we seek to meet the homeless where they are today to get them to where they want to go tomorrow by offering transitional support services that bridge the gap between street living and home living.
Many homeless are caught in transition between affordable housing and the streets. In Northeast Ohio, the wait list for housing is a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 3 years. It is a humanitarian crisis that we accept this 6 week to 3 year transition time as an acceptable amount of time for men, women, children (many disabled, addicted and ill) to live on the streets.
While emergency shelters exist for this population, they are not ideal for those facing street life for over a month. These shelters cannot accommodate people’s belongings, enforce stay limits, are often non secular, and provide few daytime shelter options. Using these services are often impractical for those with second shift jobs or impossible for those with mental disabilities.

  • Our transitional housing, via and tent city and now via land bank group housing, provides the stop-gap sheltering service Akron’s homeless need as they wait for affordable housing. These transitional homes offer safe, stable housing under homeless self governance — helping provide purpose, dignity, community and a path for reintegration into society.
  • Our Homeless Day Center in downtown Akron’s Middlebury neighborhood offers three meals a day, a food bank, laundry facilities, showers, bathrooms, internet cafe, drug rehab classes and meetings, a makers school and storage for belongings.
  • Our Shuttle Service offers rides to people who make under $1 per day and cannot afford bus passes. We give them rides to see doctors, therapists, drug rehab groups, housing managers, case workers, job interviews, trip to our day center and more. This service also takes us to people living in remote area who are in needs of food, blankets, heaters, tarps, tents and other survival gear.
